Cataraqui II 1 vs Vita Inter SC 0
Steve Vardy made all the difference in this closely fought tie at Caton’s Field.
It was a warm night with just enough breeze to prevent serious heat exhaustion. Val Tomsons replaced the injured Melvin Orozco in nets and secured his second shut out of the season. Val had to make a couple of good saves from free kicks, but the defence managed to keep the Vita forwards contained. Well done to Mark Leprise, Ted Bailey, and Andy Nadar who shut down league top goal-scorer Sal Cutrona, allowing him only a couple of long range shots. Paul Blais and Barry Cave had their usual solid game at the back.
The midfield was also strong and, particularly in the second half, was able to set the forwards through time and time again. High work effort was noted (as always) from Rob Lusink, Luc Hempel and Peter Boyle Jr, but the Vita defence were also able to keep chances to a minimum. Excellent goalkeeping was the order of the night with Pietro Cutrona handling the high balls very well and in full control of his area.
Steve’s goal came fairly late in the second half during a period of prolonged pressure from Cataraqui II. A looping shot left Pietro Cutrona stranded and found its way thankfully into the back of the net.
Excellent team play all round, and a result which takes Cataraqui II four points clear at the top of the B Division. A great game for the many noisy and jubilant fans. Next game is against Kelsey’s, again at Caton’s 1.
