There Were Windows of Opportunity But the Door Was Shut on Cat II

Cataraqui II 0 vs Bentley’s Windows LCFC II 1

It was a good night for good soccer at the St Lawrence field.  This was a highly entertaining game to watch (which I deservedly did for a fair part of the time.)  Bentley’s had the early pressure, but the game soon settled down to a well balanced interchange of chances at both ends.

The lack of any referee’s assistance cost us dearly in this one.  The Bentley’s goal was scored by a player who was clearly offside.  Nevertheless, the boys in black came back strongly and gave themselves every chance of tying up the game.  The faster young lads of Bentleys were held in check by the midfield and the defence with good coverage back and forth.  So despite some nice passing and fair skills on the ball (not to mention colourful boots), Bentleys had little more to show for their activities than long range shots which Val Tomsons handled easily.

Cataraqui dominated the second half with several chances going wide, high or just into the Bentleys ‘keeper.  Notable efforts by Joel, Roman (an amazingly powerful and well directed header from a seemingly impossible angle), Jason (a toe poke that hit the ‘keeper) were only just overshadowed by a thundering crack from Paul Blais which (undoubtedly) was headed for the top left hand corner when it struck the referee. Warren had several shots at goal, but it was not going to be our night to score.

We did escape a possible penalty, and Val had a couple of close action plays to deal with.  Overall it was a good and gutsy performance.  A draw would have been a fairer reflection.  There was a good turn out from the fan base (including one very small, but remarkably vicious dog!).
The next game is Friday at Woodbine 5 at 8:30.  Bring the bug spray.
