Orozco On Form In Narrow Cat II Win

Cataraqui II 1 vs Philthy McNasty’s 0

In what was easily the most entertaining match of the season so far, Cataraqui II just had the edge over Philthy McNasty’s at Caton’s 2 in the Friday night fixture.

This was good, hard, fair end-to-end stuff.  Both goalkeepers were on top form, and Melvin Orozco had several very good saves to keep Cataraqui 2 level in the first half. In the second half, Melvin tipped a shot over the bar that looked certain for the roof of the net and kept out a hard drive to the nearside corner.

The Cataraqui goal came during a miscommunication between defence and goalkeeper in the second half.  Peter Boyle Jr took the opportunity presented to him to score what would turn out to be the only goal of the game.  This followed a missed penalty shot by Philthy McNasty’s after the ball had hit Paul Blais on the arm in the box.  It was the opinion of the referee that Paul had redirected the ball during the incident: an opinion not shared by many on the sideline or the field.  Justice was served, however, as the ball went past Melvin’s left hand post.

In general the team played well and cohesively, adding to the enjoyment of the game.  Steve Vardy was not his usual ultrafast self (hamstring) and Ted Bailey seemed also to be carrying an injury.  George Lovell was restored to health (apart from a momentary lapse to put his wallies in a jar).

The faithful were treated to a delightful game, more reason for them to turn out for the late game on Tuesday (8:30 kick off) at Caton’s 1 against Frontenac United.
