Junior Puts In Classy Performance For Catatraqui II |
Experience on display in 4-2 win
Cataraqui II were grateful for an 8:30 start on this very hot night against the young speedsters of Soccer Post KUSC I. The good guys came out firing on all cylinders getting out to an early 2-0 margin and holding a comfortable lead from there on.
Right from the opening kickoff, the forward tandem of Luc Hempel and Peter Boyle Jr. had strong support from the midfield four of Ted Bailey, Warren Tuddy, Peter Boyle Sr. and Roman Zablocki. Chances came early and often, the most spectacular of which was on the 10 minute mark when Luc sent in a sharp header from about 18 that nearly lobbed the keeper who did well to parry it away from the top corner.
On the quarter hour mark Luc was sent in free and fouled just outside the 18. As Cataraqui players complained about the ref not letting the advantage play on and the keeper was on his left post organizing the five man wall, Boyle Sr. schooled the youngsters with a little bit of savvy. Before anyone else knew otherwise, the ball had bulged the keeper’s right hand netting and the blue shirts were up 1-0.
With nearly a full supporting cast on the bench (less our regular scribe, Dr. Morton), Coach Stewart threw in Rob Lusink (fresh off his collarbone fracture) and Val Tomsens (fresh off a cushy day at work) who performed their own bit of magic. On 22 minutes, Rob made a fabulous run down the right flank and sent in a bullet of a cross. Val went in bravely in front of his defender and the keeper and with his chin nearly scraping the dirt headed in a spectacular ball. 2-0
The young guns who had potted a second-from-the-top 17 goals in their first 5 games were clearly off their game at this point and Cat’s tenacious marking left very few options as the half wore on. Sweet throwing Andrew Nader should be congratulated for taking speedy number 9 completely out of the match. Outside of Eoin Boyle and Mark LaPrise, the backline didn’t have the speed to match its opponents, but Barry Cave, Eddie Edwards, John McGarry, George Lovell and Paul Blais were very well coordinated and gave up few chances.
On the hour mark keeper Melvin Orozco made an incredible diving save to his bottom right post - a head long dive and parry around the post. However, a clean sheet was not to be and the green shirts scored on 63 minutes. 2-1
KUSC pressed hard but Cataraqui II rose to the challenge and it wasn’t long before some aggressive defending sprung the midfield and forwards loose. Peter Boyle Jr. picked up goals in the 67th and 71st minutes to put away the victory (sorry for the lack of description but I must have had my head between my knees at this point because I don’t remember how these plays developed!). 4-1
In the waning minutes KUSC scored once more but it was a meaningless goal. The work rate was high amongst the entire team. Others not previously mentioned who contributed significantly were Brian Dodo, David Bakhurst, Peter Jenkins and Larry Hart (if I missed you, you need to play harder!).
